Sam Hunt is one of the three male country solo artists — along with Hunter Hayes and Scotty McCreery — who I will voluntarily purchase an album from and enjoy. As a whole, males in country music tend to resort to clichés, asking a girl to come up in their truck and ride. Few manage to escape this mold and actually write music that is worth listening to. But as an artist who is opening for Lady Antebellum on their Wheels Up tour and who writes with songwriters such as Shane McAnally and Josh Osborne, it's safe to say he has.
Track by Track Review
Album Rating: 7/10
- Take Your Time - I'm torn on this song. The rhymes are terrible, and while I think I see the point of the song, it comes off as borderline creepy/cat-call-y, with lyrics such as "No girl I'm not wasted". It also states that the object of his affection could've rolled her eyes and told him to go to hell, but she hasn't, so she's obviously into it??? Which makes absolutely no sense. Anyone remotely aware of the dangers women face in society wouldn't take apathy as a go ahead sign. It's simply not safe for a woman to be rude to someone who's being creepy around her. I think it's trying to give out the vibe of Hunter Hayes' "If You Told Me To", but it doesn't work. 6/10
- Leave the Night On - ALL over country radio. And it's so much more tolerable than the other songs, so I'm not complaining. It's super catchy, and yes, clichéd, but stands out. 8/10
- House Party - The rhymes in this one fall flat and are predictable sometimes, but it's certainly a fun jam. The production is a little irritating, though. 7/10
- Break Up in A Small Town - The song that, in my opinion, should've been the second single. Sure, the title could've come from a Country Song Title Generator, but who cares? It's a solid track, even if it has talking bits. Everyone criticizing the talking in these songs needs to realize the talking part of country music has been around forever. 9/10
- Single for the Summer - This one just really irritates me. It's a ballad, but not done well. It's unnecessarily long, and the production is terrible. 5/10
- Ex to See - The other terrible song on the album. The lyrics aren't good, the production isn't either. 6/10
- Make You Miss Me - Another viable candidate for a single. It's a good idea for a song, and a solid song overall. 9/10
- Cop Car - I would say this could be a single, but it's already been released by another artist as one, so. Personally, I think he should've kept it and released it himself. 10/10
- Raised on It - Quintessential bro-country. Catchy, but I can't appreciate it much as I'm female. (Which may go for other songs on the album, too.) Can't complain about anything though, so it's pretty solid. 8/10
- Speakers - A nice closer for the album. He's got nowhere near the ballad writing strength of artist such as Liz Rose or Lori McKenna, but it's solid. 9/10
