This album was released a few years ago, which generally goes against my review policy, but I'm making an exception because it just came out on Spotify, and I've very recently discovered her music and fallen in love with quite a few of the songs. (Also, shh, this is my blog. I can post whatever I want. Don't question the webmaster.)
Track by track review:
Album Rating: 8/10
- I Don't Cry - The first track paints a picture of a relationship, progressing from happier music in the beginning about the picturesque love at a coffee shop and in front of the Eiffel Tower. Throughout the song, she denies that she still cries/is upset about the relationship being over, and then finally admits, actually, she does. It's really beautifully crafted and one of my favorite tracks on the album. 10/10
- Catastrophe - The pace picks up with the second track, a song about falling-not-necisarilly-in-love but jumping headfirst into a new relationship. It was one of the songs that Graci put on her website, and for a good reason, as it's enjoyable. 9/10
- Anyways - Single girl anthem. And a super fun one. There's lots of wordplay and simple piano, and lyrics about being just too young to bother with love in the first place (a sentiment I embrace, although romance can be interesting material for songwriting...) It ties in with themes in I Don't Cry about not wanting to get heartbroken again, but stays mostly lighthearted. 10/10
- Don't Need Me - This song bridges the gap between "hmm, maybe I'll try love again" of Catastrophe and the "haha no I'm actually gonna be a nun" theme of Ugly Cat Song. One of the hardest things in a relationship can be a person not caring about or wanting you, and this song is about that. 8/10
- Ugly Cat Song - Single girl anthem #2! It might even be more hilarious than Anyways. And the references to Sound of Music win me over. "I'll get a few cats...and the ugliest one I will name after you/He'll probably hate me and I'll hate him too/But what's new?" Do I even need to explain more why I love this one? 10/10
- Summer Can Be Sweet - This is the one track that I don't like as much as the rest of the album — it's a bit too long for me (even though I usually enjoy ballads). It's not bad, just not one of my favorites. 7/10
- Lovely - There's some really beautiful instruments in the background of this track, and it's a ballad that I definitely enjoy. It's a sweet song that would be fit for a dance at a wedding. 9/10
- That's What I Thought - The wordplay comes back in this song, with sassy lyrics to boot. I quite like verbal-smackdown-sassy-songs, and this song is very well written, so....10/10
- I Promise You - This track is very similar in theme to Don't Need Me, although instead of being about realizing that someone doesn't need you, it's about telling the person that they don't need you. It's nicely done, but the end doesn't feel very complete. 7/10
- Lay My Life Down - This is another one of my favorite tracks on the album — it sounds slightly country-esque with the instrumentals and the theme (which is essentially dedicating your life to being a good person and helping those in need). It's a good closing track for the album, and well written. 10/10
